Hello friends. I am trying to test out Xeoma in an effort to see if this is the software I want to purchase for my home CCTV system. Currently I run an Ubuntu Server 12.04.4 system in my basement. It does an array of things, including video surveillance via the Motion package over MJPG streams. I'm trying to locate a different alternative, and so far Xeoma seems like it may hit the mark. There are a few things that I'm not overly keen on (seemingly proprietary .xem files despite the export functions, etc.), but I want to give the software a real shot.

In an effort to test properly, I set up an entirely new server with Ubuntu Server 12.04.4. It's a brand new install. I copied the xeoma.app file I downloaded online for Linux to that server and I tried launching it from terminal. Problem is the -core function seems to die off on its own without warning.

On top of that (and understably so) the client on my Ubuntu 13.10 laptop (same version) fails to connect remotely. The IP is correct, no firewalls are in place, and I have the password from the -showpassword flag. Even still it throws an error saying unable to connect etc etc. I'm certainly assuming this is related to the fact the system's process is tanking, but as mentioned above, I have no idea why. I tried rebooting this box and redoing these steps, but no dice.

Anybody have any idea what's going on?

I just realized that Xeoma's boasting of lifetime licenses was incredibly deceiving, as the updates for the software are only for one year. So roughly translated, they're really not lifetime licenses because your software has an unavoidable expiration period. You can say "but the version you're left with will still work for life", but that's still impossible to say from a fact based standpoint. As we all know as cameras get updated, both through newer firmwares and new model replacements, they very likely will need the newer code of the CCTV software to function. I've continuously seen updates fix camera compatibility, so this inevitably dictates that it's really not as much of a "lifetime license" as what's posted all over the site. I don't necessarily have a problem with this business model, but saying it's lifetime licensing is undoubtedly shady.

As a result, no need to bother with a resolution to this thread. I'll keep looking for other software solutions.

I recently found Xeoma and installed it on my Ubuntu server (12.04).
I don't know enough about running strictly from the command line though, so I installed the gnome desktop, without all the "extras", so I would have a gui to work with. I have been running xeoma for a week and I like it. I am a fan of Foscam so that is all I use for cameras and was using their software as well... until I discovered xeoma. One of the features I really like is the playback of archives, but overall I am impressed with the software.

I modified an old Windows Home Server (Acer H340) and had no problem installing Ubuntu server. Initially I was going to use it for my OwnCloud, which worked nice but the server just didn't have enough power to serve up my files fast enough so I decided to make it my security camera server and it is working wonderfully.

I have a static ip set up and I have a router in line, I have my port forward set so I can open a client at work and I have had absolutely no problems so far.

Free updates of the program are included for the first 12 months since the license purchase date. When those 12 months are over, you can buy a new license and use it with the newest Xeoma version (1 more year of free updates).
Also you can update to the newest version anyway and therefore give up on your license. You will be able to use Xeoma in a trial or free mode (without the license).
Or you may continue using the latest version at the moment of the deadline. But you can use this version forever. The license doesn't expire, it is still functional, you just can't get free updates anymore. If you need to start getting the free updates again, we suggest you to buy a new license.
